Zambia: MOPANI TO REOPEN THIS WEDNESDAY

Mopani Copper Mines -MCM that has been on care and maintenance since April 7 last month is scheduled for reopening this week.

National Union of Miners and Allied Workers Union – NUMAW President James Chansa has disclosed that MCM management has officially informed the union on the reopening of both the Mufulira and Kitwe business units on Wednesday.

Mr. Chansa has further announced that all the eleven thousand jobs at the mine are fully secured.
Mopani placed its operations on care and maintenance citing the alleged Covid 19 outbreak and low metal prices.
The partial closure of MCM saw hundreds of miners and unions in the extractive sector resort to protests.

Government and Glencore the owners of MCM are tommorow expected to issue a joint statement on the reopening of Mopani.
