Zambia: MOPANI COPPER MINES RECORDS SECOND FATAL ACCIDENT WITHIN 48 HOURS.

Mopani Copper Mines PLC has recorded a second fatal accident within 48 hours, with the latest incident involving 35 year old Anderson Mwaba who is reported to have accidentally fallen through the roof and sustained fatal injuries at the smelter concentrate shed in Mufulira.The accident happened on yesterday, Tuesday, 22nd March 2022 around 16:00 hours barely 48 hours after another fatal accident involving a 45 year old boiler maker, Justin Nsakanya, at the south ore body-sob shaft in Kitwe which occurred on Sunday 20th March 2022 around 13:00 hours.Confirming the incident, Mopani Copper Mines Public Relations Manager Nebert Mulenga explained that the fatal accident in Mufulira occurred as a team of contractor employees were working on the concentrate shed and Mr. Mwaba, accidentally fell through the roof and sustained fatal injuries.Mr. Mulenga says Mopani Copper Mines is working closely with the mines safety department, Zambia Police and other relevant authorities to investigate what could have caused this tragic accident.He adds that operations at the smelter concentrate shed where the incident happened have been suspended until further notice and that the mine management expresses its deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased and will provide them with the necessary support during this difficult time.
