Zambia: CNMC LUANSHYA COPPER MINES RECORDS 83 PERCENT PROGRESS ON SHAFT 28 DEWATERING

CNMC Luanshya Copper Mines says the dewatering of Shaft 28 has reached 83 percent completion, marking significant progress toward the full resumption of mining operations in 2026.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer Robert Kamanga says once completed, the project will produce up to 55,000 tonnes of copper annually and create more than 3,000 jobs, giving Luanshya’s economy a major lift.

Mr. Kamanga explains that a new geological assessment has revealed an increase in ore reserves from 18 million to 50 million tonnes, extending the mine’s lifespan to 20 years.

He added that the 710-million-dollar investment has so far utilized 64 million dollars, with 100 million dollars allocated to water pumping alone. Between 2024 and 2025, LCM also invested 200 million dollars in upgrading infrastructure and modernizing mining systems.

Mr. Kamanga further disclosed that construction of a new processing plant will begin in late 2026, and recruitment of local skilled workers has already started to ensure community participation in the project.

Meanwhile, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo has praised the mine for being ahead of schedule, describing the progress as a strong indicator that Luanshya is bouncing back as one of the Copperbelt’s leading mining towns.

Mr. Matambo said the development supports President Hakainde Hichilema’s goal of producing three million tonnes of copper annually, reaffirming government’s commitment to reviving the mining sector.

The dewatering of more than 72 million cubic liters of water began in April 2024 and is expected to be completed early next year, paving the way for full-scale operations at Shaft 28.
