Mozambique: MOZAMBIQUE ROVUMA VENTURE: TECHNIP, JGC AND SAMSUNG CONSORTIUM SECURES $1.1B AREA 4 CONTRACT

A consortium formed by Technip Energies, JGC Holdings, and Samsung Heavy Industries has been selected to carry out the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation and Commissioning (EPCIC) contract for the Coral Norte FLNG project in Area 4 of Mozambique’s Rovuma Basin, offshore Cabo Delgado.

According to Reuters, the contract was awarded by Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), which manages Area 4 operations on behalf of its partners, including Eni, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH), XRG (a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company), and Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS).

The total value of the EPCIC contract is estimated at below 5 billion US dollars. Technip Energies confirmed that its portion exceeds 1.1 billion dollars, while JGC Holdings stated its share is valued at more than 1 billion dollars.

The scope of the contract covers only the construction and delivery of the Coral Norte FLNG floating production unit, including engineering, procurement of equipment, construction, installation, and commissioning. It does not include the full development costs of the Coral Norte gas field.

Coral Norte FLNG will be the second floating liquefied natural gas facility in Area 4, following Coral Sul FLNG, which began production and exports in 2022.

The new unit will have an annual production capacity of around 3.6 million tonnes of LNG, increasing the total output of the Coral complex to approximately 7 million tonnes per year.

Under the contract structure, Technip Energies and JGC will handle engineering and project management of topside facilities and equipment procurement, while Samsung Heavy Industries will be responsible for constructing the floating hull and industrial modules.

Technip Energies CEO Arnaud Pieton stated that the project will contribute to expanding LNG production capacity and reinforcing Mozambique’s role as a strategic supplier in global energy markets.

The award follows Eni’s confirmation during the Mozambique Mining and Energy Conference and Exhibition 2026 that Coral Norte represents the next phase of LNG development in Area 4, with production expected to begin in 2028 after lessons learned from Coral Sul operations.

The project is part of broader efforts to monetize Mozambique’s vast natural gas reserves in the Rovuma Basin, considered among the largest in Africa, and is expected to stimulate local business participation, strengthen local content, and increase fiscal revenues from the extractive sector.
