Zambia: THE MALAWI HIGH COMMISSIONER’S INSIGHTS ON THE VISIT TO KONKOLA DEEP MINING PROJECT IN CHILILABOMBWE

Malawi High Commissioner to Zambia, Her Excellency Ms. Margaret Kamoto undertook a familiarization tour of Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP) in Chililabombwe on the Copperbelt. The visit by High Commissioner Kamoto and her delegation was aimed at appreciating the mine’s operations.

After the tour, the High Commissioner described Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) as a beacon of mining excellence on the African continent, with the mineral wealth anchored by copper making it a key player not only in Sothern Africa but also on the global stage.

Ms. Kamoto said KCM is one of Zambia’s proudest industrial achievements and a symbol of strength and resilience of the nation’s economy.

She noted that her visit to the mine underscored the deep and enduring ties between Malawi and Zambia, bound by geography, history and a shared vision for sustainable development.

“As a neighbour and close partner, Malawi celebrates Zambia’s achievement in this sector and looks forward to learning from its mining expertise for the development of our own mining sector,” she added. “I firmly believe that the success of mines like KCM can serve as a catalyst for strengthening industrial linkages between our two countries, creating opportunities for Malawian suppliers, engineers and other professionals.”

The High Commissioner said as Malawi continues to explore and develop its own mineral potential, the Government looked forward to deeper cooperation and knowledge exchange with KCM in geological surveying, value addition, policy design and sustainable mining governance.

Ms. Kamoto further commended the mining firm’s effort in promoting responsible mining practices, environmental protection and community development, acknowledging it’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The High Commissioner noted that mining must not just be about the extraction of minerals, but about the upliftment of communities through responsible CSR.
