KCM SHUTS ITS ACID PLANT

Konkola Copper Mines -KCM- has shut down its Acid Plant in Chingola following a report involving an abnormal discharge of Sulphur Dioxide from the Sulphur Burner component Plant.

And the Zambia Environmental Management Agency – ZEMA- has since dispatched a team of Inspectors to investigate the incident.

ZEMA Manager – Corporate Affairs Irene Chipili says further regulatory action will be undertaken in line with provisions of the Environmental Management Act Number 12 of 2011 once investigations are concluded.

Mrs. Chipili says preliminary information availed by KCM indicate that a number of people living in the surrounding areas of the plant have been affected by the emissions.

She says some people have since been hospitalized.
