Small Scale Miners in Kitwe have disclosed intentions to officially engage government to acquire shares in Mopani Copper Mines plc after the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines – Investment Holdings -ZCCM-IH successfully becomes a majority shareholder.Chapamo mineral resources, an umbrella company of Zambian small scale miners that recently utilized the 10 percent owned by zccm-ih at Kitwe’s famous black mountain, has disclosed to phoenix news that it has always been the interest of the group of Zambian small scale miners to own shares in the country’s mines which is now achievable when ZCCM acquires more shares in Mopani.Chapamo mineral resource’s director kelvin tembo explained that his company will engage the ministry of mines and other relevant agencies over the procedure to acquire shares in Mopani and to eventually own shares in more Zambian mines to enhance the country’s quest to localize profits from the sub-sector.he adds that small scale miners have over the years learnt best mining practices from the experts that have operated in Zambia and are now ready to own the mines especially that a sense of ownership will help maximize production and profits which is currently nonexistent under foreign owners. Government is currently negotiating with Glencore for zccm-ih to acquire over 90 percent of its 73.1 percent stake in Mopani copper mines with both the mineworkers union of Zambia and the national union of miners and allied workers recently declaring interest to own shares in the mine on behalf of workers after government takes over operations.
