Zambia: FQM and UNZA Join Forces for Mining Excellence

First Quantum Minerals has partnered with the University of Zambia to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the mining sector.
This collaboration will provide students with valuable internships, scholarships, and joint training programmes, equipping them with the skills needed to excel in the industry.
Research and development will also be a focus, addressing key challenges like environmental sustainability and resource management.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, FQM Trident General Manager Gordon White said, “Through this alliance, we aim to bridge the gap between industry and academia, creating a symbiotic relationship where both entities can thrive.
We recognise the importance of equipping the next generation with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the mining sector and beyond. Through internships, scholarships, and joint training programmes, we will provide students with hands-on experience and exposure to industry best practices.
Research and development will also be a cornerstone of our collaboration. By working together, we can tackle some of the pressing challenges faced by the mining industry today, such as environmental sustainability, resource management, and technological advancements.”
Speaking at the same event, Vice Chancellor of the University of Zambia, Professor Mundia Muya, said, “This agreement offers an excellent opportunity to expand the educational and training cooperation between the two institutions, particularly in the areas of geology, mining engineering, metallurgy, and mineral processing, as well as social-economic issues related to mining. The University of Zambia recognises the value of the connection between the two institutions.”
The combined efforts between the two institutions, will not only enhance FQM’s operations but also contribute to the global body of knowledge in the mining sector, through curriculum enhancement and alignment to ensure that the degree programmes being offered are current, relevant, and adaptive to industry standards, statutory requirements, and international standards.
