Perenti workforce unaffected by attack on mine

Perenti has reported a security incident at its Canadian partner company Semafo’s Bongou mine in Burkina Faso, western Africa.

The incident involved members of Perenti’s workforce from African Mining Services (AMS).

A convoy of five buses containing AMS employees, Semafo workers and employees of other Semafo suppliers, were travelling between the mine site and Fada road escorted by military police when it came under attack.

Emergency response procedures were activated and the immediate location of the incident has been secured.

Perenti confirmed in a statement that there were a number of fatalities and injuries as a result of the incident.

“It is with deep sadness that Perenti advises the information we have to date is that there have been a number of fatalities and injuries, however, we are still working to confirm details with local authorities,” Perenti stated in a press release.

“We are currently working with local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of our workforce. This is our highest priority. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this attack and with their families.”

Perenti is engaging with Semafo to consider the implications of this incident and the current security situation in Burkina Faso.

According to Semafo, Bongou’s site remains secured and operations are not affected. The company is working with all levels of authorities to ensure its employees, contractors and suppliers are safe.
